UGA to Buy 13 More Electric Buses with Federal Grant

The University of Georgia has been awarded $7.46 million under the Federal Transit Administration’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program to purchase an additional 13 electric buses.
The funding, along with UGA’s 30% matching share, will grow the university’s fleet to 33 electric buses, representing a tremendous step forward in reducing emissions and increasing opportunities for experiential learning and research.
Twenty electric buses were purchased in April 2019 through a competitive grant from the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority and are currently in production at the Proterra Inc. plant in Greenville, South Carolina. These buses will begin arriving on campus later this month and are anticipated to go into service this academic year, giving UGA one of the largest electric bus fleets of any university in North America. Electric Buses to Arrive on Campus

Proterra Catalyst electric buses are expected to arrive on campus within the next academic year! After receiving a $10 million grant from the GO! Transit Capital Program administered by Georgia’s State Road and Tollway Authority, UGA has established a contract to purchase up to 20 Proterra Catalyst E2 electric buses.
The new buses will also dramatically reduce transportation, maintenance and operating costs, which will help keep student fees low. Don Walter, the interim associate director of Auxiliary Services and the director of UGA TPS, says, “The addition of the buses — which offer a smooth, quiet ride with zero emissions — will make the electric bus fleet at UGA one of the largest in the U.S.” Energy costs for the current diesel buses total approximately $90 per bus per day, but these new electric buses will cost approximately less than $10 per bus per day.
