What is the Stepping Stones Program?
A “stepping stone” is defined as a means of progress or advancement. The Auxiliary Services Stepping Stones program provides employees throughout the unit an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Auxiliary Services and grow their skills and abilities while exploring potential career paths beyond their current position.
Program participants are assigned to a mentor and project consistent with their career goals as outlined in their program application. The projects typically last for six to eight weeks, with six to eight hours per week required to complete the project. In some cases, participants are reassigned for a six to eight week period to a job consistent with their career goals. Their current work position is held, and participants return to their current position when the program is completed.
What opportunities are available?
Stepping Stones opportunities are available in the following Auxiliary Service departments:
- Auxiliary Services Administration
- Business Analytics
- Business Process Improvement
- Finance
- Information Technology
- Learning and Development
- Marketing and Communications
- Dining Services
- Golf Course
- Transportation and Parking Services
Each department offers a wide range of project opportunities related to various career fields. For example, an employee who is interested in the accounting field may be matched to a mentor in Finance and complete a project assisting with inventory processing and account reconciliation.
How do I apply?
Full-time employees who are interested in Stepping Stones should complete an online application. Applicants are required to submit a résumé and cover letter with the application.
Applications are reviewed by a selection panel that determines admission to the program and assigns a mentor.
If chosen to participate, employees go through an interview and approval process with their department of interest.
Final approval of all assignments is determined by department managers and/or directors.
